Child Protection awareness in criminal justice

Total course length: 1 day

Cost from: £negotiable, subject to number of attendees - all courses can be tailored to the requirements of individual teams and agencies
Suitable for: All criminal justice practitioners

Trainer: Kathy Weigh

" I would not hesitate to recommend Kathy as a training facilitator"
Wendy Monelly, former Deputy YOT Manager (current Foster Care Manager)

The following areas can be tailored to your teams' needs and will enable YOT practitioners to increase their awareness of child protection issues within a youth justice setting and their responsibilities. By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Identify some of the signs and symptoms of child abuse
  • Define the types of child abuse and explain the potential impact on the child
  • Describe the difference between child protection and safeguarding
  • Identify their responsibilities regarding child protection issues as a YOT practitioner

Training programme

  • Exercise on facts and myths regarding child abuse
  • Group exercise to identify what is abuse and the possible signs and symptoms
  • Case studies looking at the “Continuum of abuse” and the difference between abuse and accidents
  • Group exercise on responding to disclosure as a YOT practitioner
  • Case studies to identify a course of action within a YOT setting
  • Individual exercise on the importance of confidentiality
  • “Jigsaw exercise” on information sharing

This course could also be combined with one of the following or adapted to meet the needs of the organisation:

  • Introduction to safeguarding – a one-day course which gives a brief overview of various elements of safeguarding, including child abuse awareness, dealing with disclosures, policy writing and risk assessment and safe activities
  • Child protection policy writing – can be delivered as a half-day course after the one-day child protection awareness training, or as a full day on its own.  It covers some of the basic principles of writing a child protection policy and what should be included.
  • The role of the designated worker - a one-day course which looks at the role and responsibilities of the nominated child protection worker.
